Seed should be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. Seeds started later may not have enough time to reach maturity before the first autumnal killing frost. Seedlings can be transplanted into the garden once all danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds 1/8" deep in pots, keep well watered to ensure proper germination. The minimum soil germination temperature is 50ºF but seeds may take up to 30 days to germinate at this temperature. The ideal germination temperature for tomatoes is 75ºF. Thin to one tomato plant per >12" pot, or one tomato plant every 18".

Adding too much compost or manure to freshly transplanted seedlings may cause an abundance of top green growth with little fruit set. Adding a layer of compost to the soil once flowers have appeared will add a nutrient boost to help encourage growth of tomatoes. Tomato plants may need to be staked or caged in order to keep tomatoes off the ground and prevent rot.
